I have always believed, though I haven’t always practiced it,
that saying a prayer before studying the scriptures is a wise and beautiful
habit. Last week, the thought came to me in a new way.
Before we feed our physical bodies, we pause to ask for a
blessing on the food prepared for us, that it will strengthen and nourish us.
Why wouldn’t we do the same before feeding our spirits?
If the scriptures are the “feast” the Lord has laid before
us, then a simple prayer before we study becomes our way of asking that what we
read will sink deep into our hearts, strengthen our faith, and nourish our
souls. Just as our bodies need daily nourishment, our spirits need it too.
How much richer our study could be if we invited the Lord to
bless the spiritual meal we are about to partake of, so that we may grow
healthy, strong, and steady in Him.
That's a cool thought..I actually hadn't really thought about it before like that either. All i know is that if I do pray before I study, I get much more out of it.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I haven't really ever thought about it that way before either. That's a good point.
